How Boeing Employees Learned to Contribute to the Bottom Line

Solutions: Business Acumen
Products: Zodiak

The Boeing Company is a world leader in the design and manufacture of commercial aircraft. Senior management at Boeing knows that being a leader in the industry is both a remarkable achievement and an ongoing challenge. To maintain this distinction, the company must constantly improve in all aspects of its business and must depend on the skill, knowledge and motivation of its people to achieve quality, profitability and growth…the three most important criteria for Boeing business success.

Boeing believes that the only sustainable long term competitive advantage for the company lies in employees’ ability to learn. In this learning culture, it is recognized that all employees need to understand the “business” of Boeing’s business and their own place in the company’s success.

The Boeing Center for Leadership and Learning (BCLL) developed a Business Competency Curriculum designed to focus on the “big picture” of business finance and strategy and, more specifically, on how The Boeing Company operates to be most successful for its shareholders, customers, suppliers and employees.

Paradigm Learning’s Zodiak®: The Game of Business Finance and Strategy, was chosen as a key part of this curriculum. A videotape is used during each Zodiak session to introduce the game and then to make key points about the links between Zodiak and The Boeing Company as the game progresses. A custom-designed “Connections” module is used after the Zodiak simulation to focus on Boeing financial terminology, measures, strategies and more. One of the key exercises for learners is an analysis of a Boeing annual report. Classes have included a broad mix of learners, from top-level managers to factory-floor employees. The primary target audience for the program, however, has been managers participating in BCLL leadership training.

Only 7% of employees fully understand their company's business strategies and what's expected of them in order to help achieve company goals.

“Zodiak has generated some of the best discussions I have facilitated at Boeing. Everyone wants to see Boeing be successful and make an individual contribution to that success.”

More than 7,500 Boeing employees have been trained in the Zodiak program, and Zodiak continues to be a popular offering for the company. The program has extremely positive “word of mouth.” Course evaluations and informal feedback indicate that attendees have a much stronger grasp of the financial issues involved in Boeing’s business and are more likely to understand how they can affect the company’s profitability. The “Share Value Program,” initiated as an employee profit- sharing plan, has made it even more important for employees to understand the bottom line and their own roles in success.

According to John Hippely of BCLL, “Zodiak has generated some of the best discussions I have facilitated at Boeing. Everyone wants to see Boeing be successful and make an individual contribution to that success.”
