Getting Leadership Development on the Track and up to Speed with Hyundai Motor America

Solutions: Leadership Accountability
Products: Impact5

Hyundai Motor America has seen rapid sales growth in the last decade, which has accelerated not only a demand for skilled workers, but also a need to hire or train talented leaders. Partnering with Paradigm Learning, Hyundai utilized a business simulation to nurture and develop their future leaders with the tools and accountabilities needed for success.

Challenge

Research had turned up an interesting statistic for Hyundai executives: of the leadership brought in from outside their company, only 22 percent had remained after five years. However, 75 percent of those promoted from within had remained after the same time period.

It became obvious to Hyundai that cultivating homegrown leadership was worth the effort. But that raised another issue: how should the company go about nurturing and developing its future leaders—especially in an ever-tightening labor market?

Action

Hyundai partnered with Paradigm Learning and incorporated Impact 5: The Business of Leadership Game into their development program. Using competitive game situations, participants simulated managing a department within a fictitious company. They faced the challenge of getting results, dealt with interdepartmental relationships, and balanced tactical and strategic decisions. They learned about being part of a larger leadership team whose individual and collective actions affect employees, customers and the business as a whole.

The leadership program helped participants make connections between classroom theory and business-world reality, by helping them answer necessary questions: What are the top challenges facing my organization, and where do I fit in? What challenges do I face in fulfilling my accountabilities? What tools can I use to execute my accountabilities?

Hyundai is thrilled with the results of the program. Those who have completed it have received certification as leaders in the company. And executives from all over the organization are lining up other top talent to get into future programs.

“It just ties everything together. We read books, we give presentations, we talk about what leadership is and how it works, but Impact5® is the way we apply everything we’ve talked about.” - Manager of Training and Organizational Development, Hyundai

According to this Modern Survey study, 33% of leaders at organizations with more than 100 employees are looking to leave right now!
